Sandy River Retreat Farm Stay is a working experiment in self-sufficient and sustainable family farming located in Rice, Virginia.
We have 16 acres of land, a natural vegetable garden, fruit trees, a small flock of sheep, free range chickens, miniature donkeys, Nubian/Boer goats, turkey and some guinea fowl.
We welcome our guests to explore the farm, and arrangements can be made for a guided tour and feeding. For safety reasons we cannot permit guests to enter pastures or feed animals without a guide.
There is no other place like this around here. These cabins are close to the 740-acre Sandy River Reservoir, that is rated #2 for the best bass fishing in Virginia. The Gallion State Forest and Twin Lakes State Park are just a few minutes down the road.
The Log Cabins
This retreat is the place to be if you enjoy being outdoors, hunting, and fishing, yet you still like the convienience of being less than 5 minutes from the growing town of Farmville, where you can find restaurants, coffee shops, an authentic Belgian bakery, bridal boutiques, clothing stores, a local farmers market, unique shops, including the well-known Green Front Furniture and accessories stores.
This area is also home to Hampden-Sydney College and Longwood University
Farm Life
We are a pet-friendly retreat and we have two golden retrievers, Samson and Delilah.

These custom hand-crafted log homes were completed in June 2008. The designer and builder, Mark Smith, of Mark Smith Construction, Inc. specializes in building these homes through-out central Virginia.
